Searching for Amorsolo

Digital print
55” x 35”
2009

This work is a map of the site where Philippine National Artist Fernando Amorsolo is buried. Internet searches on Amorsolo’s resting place only showed a photograph of his tomb and indicated that it was in Marikina City. With no further information, I went to Marikina and looked for the tomb. Having found it, I created this map of the tombstones and gravemarkers. The map was represented in this way to resemble code. It is unclear what the rectangles depict but there is a logic in their arrangement that suggests they should be interpreted. The title, “Searching for Amorsolo”, refers to the viewer searching for Amorsolo in this map, my physical search for Amorsolo in Marikina City, and the process of searching for meaning in this abstract depiction before one realizes it is a map.
